Leaders Connect at our Member-only Mixer

On June 5, 35 nonprofit leaders, representing Center member nonprofits from Virginia, DC, and Maryland, met and mingled at the Center’s Member-only Mixer. Hosted by the Center along with long-term partner Staples Advantage, the event gave attendees the chance to connect and gain insight from prominent leaders in our sector.

Mariam Nek, with Center Member Friendship Place, said the mixer was "not just a look out for yourself meeting. It turned out well."

The mixer was open to staff and board from nonprofits that were members with the Center. The aim for the mixer was for the attendees to get a unique perspective and have an honest discussion from each of the breakout leaders around the mixer topic. In addition, attendees were able to engage one another, while learning about our breakout leaders and their nonprofits. Attendees also enjoyed a wonderful breakfast presented by Staples Advantage.

Renita, with Arts, said the mixer exceeded her expectations.

Along with the networking, attendees participated in two breakout sessions with our breakout leaders, Peg Hacskaylo, MSW and Dr. Madye Henson. Peg Hacskaylo, MSW, Founder and the Executive Director of the District Alliance for Safe Housing (DASH), spoke about the roller coaster ride of success and set backs she encountered in her journey with DASH. She believes the toughest problems nonprofits face is "how to stay in existance."

Dr. Madye Henson, President and CEO of Covenant House Washington and the Greater DC Region addressed the more intimate side of nonprofit worker's lives and gave tips to combat the difficulty of balancing work and personal life.

She believes it is important for those in the nonprofit sector to "find other leaders of like-minded people" and praised the Center for providing a safe space for leaders to connect.

The Center hosts networking and learning opportunities like the Member-only Mixer around the greater Washington region as part of its ongoing commitment to strengthen its member nonprofits by helping them learn innovative practices and to connect with one another in a professional and personal way.
