Changes on the Horizon for Overtime Laws

The Department of Labor is going to be rolling out some big changes to its overtime laws. The reworked law will affect all sectors, and will mean that employers will need to update their compensation policies.

UPDATED: DC Mayor Proposes $15 Minimum Wage

Earlier this week, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser stated in her State of the District Address that after the City Council returns from break next month, she will introduce legislation that will increase the city's minimum wage from $10.50 to $15.00 by 2020. Minimum wage is scheduled to increase by an extra dollar to $11.50 this July. 

The most recent wage hike happened in 2013 when it was raised to its current state from $8.50.

DC Could Become National Leader in Paid Parental Leave

The District of Columbia may be about to get the nation's most generous paid parental leave system. Under a bill that was introduced this past Tuesday, October 6, at a City Council meeting, DC residents would be able to use up to 16 weeks of paid parental and family leave.

Montgomery County Council Passes New Paid Sick Leave Law

Last month, the County Council of Montgomery County, MD passed a new paid sick leave bill that will go into effect on October 1, 2016. While the actual implementation of the law is still over a year away, it promises to drastically change the lives of thousands of employees in the county.

Center Staff visits DCTV

On April 14, the Membership Department and its Mexico 100 Interns visited long-time Center member DCTV, the district’s only television station devoted entirely to local programming created by and for D.C.’s communities. The membership team was welcomed by DCTV’s Community Outreach & Media Manager, Jo-Ann Enwezor, who led the team on a tour of DCTV’s facilities. Read more »
